Why Do I Create Stuff?
I like to do a lot of things: draw, paint, knit, quilt, write, read, teach… anything creative except cook. I don’t like to cook (or clean, but I still do those things because otherwise I wouldn’t have the energy or space to create). Given the opportunity to spend uninterrupted hours doing anything I wanted, I would probably choose to draw (analog or digital, either is fine by me). Of course, if I’m more in the mood to write then I would be fine writing. Or knitting. Or… well, I think you get the point. I NEED to create.
Creating something – or even the process of trying to create something – is in my bones. It is the core of my being. It’s an undeniable force that drives my actions. While I usually strive to complete something, often the process of just playing around is satisfying enough.
So am I creating just to satisfy this urge? Yes and no. Certainly doing is quite fulfilling on a basic level. It is soothing and calming and I feel most like myself if I participate in a creative endeavor. But there is also a desire to share those creations in hopes of spreading a little kindness, happiness, and joy in the world.
Most of my work stems from these themes. I’m generally an upbeat, happy person. I seek to find the good in people. And if my art or writing can brighten someone’s day just a little bit, then it is worth creating.
