Block Five: Susannah

This week, it’s all about squares! No half-square triangles and no flying geese (don’t worry – they’ll be back!).
We’ll be making a total of eight blocks this week. These will fill in the spaces between last week’s blocks to complete another round. You could stop here and have a lovely small quilt, but why not keep going – there are seven more weeks of blocks to make!
Materials Needed
Makes eight (8) blocks:
- Eight (8) 4.5″ rectangles for centers (medium green)
- Thirty-two (32) 2.5″ squares (medium green)
- Thirty-two (32) 2.5″ squares (medium pink)
- Sixty-four (64) 2.5″ squares (dark pink)

Making the Block
1. Make the Center Unit
- Step 1: Take one small square and position it on one corner of the larger center square, right sides together. Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the smaller square. Repeat on opposite corner.
- Step 2: Sew directly on the drawn line and press the small squares back to form triangles at corners.
- Step 3: Trim off the excess fabric. Save the scraps for future projects or leader/ender sewing.
- Step 4: Repeat this process on the remaining corners of the center square.

2. Assemble the Blocks
- Layout the components of the block, with small green squares in each corner, the large center unit in the center. Place dark pink and medium pink squares around the perimeter as shown.
- Sew the top four squares to form a row. Repeat for the bottom four squares.
- Sew each set of two side squares together. Sew these to the large center unit to form a row.
- Sew the three rows together to form the block.
- Repeat for a total of eight blocks.

Tips for success
Fabric Placement: If you’re working with batiks, you’ll love that both sides of the fabric are the same—no need to worry about right or wrong sides!
Precision: Take your time with sewing the dark pink squares to the large green squares to ensure sharp, even points.
Batch Sewing: Chain-piece your units to save time and keep the process efficient.
Looking Ahead
You’ve now completed the Flying Geese blocks that will frame your Sawtooth Star! Next week, we’ll introduce a new block to add some pizzazz to our quilt. Stay tuned for week 3 of the quilt-along.
