Welcome to the Stars in My Garden quilt-along! I’m Stacy of Stacy Creat Stuff, and I’m thrilled to kick off this series with our very first block: the Sawtooth Star. This bright and vibrant quilt is designed to chase away those winter blues, and it all starts with this beginner-friendly block. Let’s dive in!

About the Quilt-Along

The Stars in My Garden quilt-along is a free series designed to guide you through creating a colorful, star-themed quilt. The guide for this quilt is available to download for free, and you can also join the Stars in My Garden email list to receive weekly reminders and links to written instructions and videos for each block.

Block One: Sawtooth Star

The Sawtooth Star is a classic quilt block and the centerpiece of our quilt. For this first week, you only need to make one block. Future weeks will involve creating multiple blocks of the same design, but for now, we’re starting simple.

Materials Needed:

  • One 4.5-inch square for the center (dark pink)

  • Four 2.5 x 4.5-inch rectangles for the star points (light pink)

  • Eight 2.5-inch squares for flying geese units (medium pink)

  • Four 2.5-inch squares for the block corners (light blue)

Make sure your pieces are pre-cut and sorted to make assembly easier.

Making the Block

1. Layout the Block

Begin by arranging your pieces on a design board. Place the large square in the center, the rectangles on each side, and the corner squares in place. This forms the nine-patch layout of the block.

2. Create Flying Geese Units

Flying geese units form the star points. Follow these steps to make them:

  • Step 1: Take one small square and place it on one end of a rectangle, right sides together. Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the square.

  • Step 2: Sew directly on the drawn line and press the square back to form a triangle.

  • Step 3: Trim off the excess fabric. Save the scraps for future projects or leader/ender sewing.

  • Step 4: Repeat this process on the other end of the rectangle to complete the flying geese unit. Make four flying geese units.

3. Assemble the Rows

Now that your flying geese are ready:

  • Arrange the flying geese, the center square, and the corner squares into three rows.

  • Sew the pieces of each row together, ensuring seams are pressed for a flat assembly.

  • Join the rows to complete the block.

Tips & Tricks

  • Scrap Management: Save trimmed-off triangles to create half-square triangles for another project.

  • Efficient Sewing: Mark all diagonal lines at once to streamline the sewing process.

Looking Ahead

Next week, we’ll tackle Block 2, which will involve creating multiple blocks of the same design. Make sure you’re subscribed to my YouTube channel and email list to stay updated.

  1. Thank you for designing such a glorious quilt. I have been looking for a new quilt to make in 2025.
All the other BOM’s that I have considered were not nearly this colorful. I do like color. Again
    thank you.

  2. I’m so happy that YOU, and Your Stars in My Garden showed up this morning on you tube! What a fabulous pattern you have created! I love your colors, though I may add a few more greens and take out some blues. Not sure, as it is nice to not have so many fabric choices and colors to worry about, taking up so much time. You are very organized! I love it! Not sure which of my block of months I will put on hold for now, so I have time for yours. I only have over 25, counting my works in progress. I really don’t want to think about all my UFO’s! I will finish up a bunch this year, as I’m getting old and I really don’t want to leave this world with unfinished life stuff. LOL Thank you so much for sharing!

    1. Awww, thank you! I think more greens (and maybe a hint of yellow?) would be a fun change. I love when people take my designs and make them their own!
